Syd & Mallory Spotlight

Syd and Mallory on student style

Housed amongst an enclave of vintage and independent fashion shops, Syd and Mallory in The Forum is more than just a mere vintage clothing store.

A joint business venture between two close friends, this little boutique inspires fashion-wear that is every bit as original as making your own clothes.

Syd and Mallory embodies creativity and originality, with its carefully painted walls and quirky store designs (the centrepiece: a line of scissors draping artistically off a host of lightbulbs) the owners Kirsteen and Lucy certainly wear this bold corporate ethos on their sleeves.

Bringing together and reworking new fabrics and vintage materials to invent clothing one can truly call their own, the store aims to keep costs low and bring to the public modern styles without the hefty price-tag.

Your Granny’s calf-length pencil skirt can now be tweaked into that party head-turner in this industrious place.

The young boutique got its name from the owners’ favourite personalities: the late Syd Barrett (from the rock band Pink Floyd), and the character Mallory Knox from the 1994 film Natural Born Killers.

Thus mirroring the nature of this thriving business – bringing random subjects together to bring out a refreshing concept.

Describing the boutique in three words, they gave "raw, edgy" and "individual".

One would be well impressed with the range of products available in-store for sale, from clothes to accessories, personalised greeting cards to home-ware, like duvets and cushions, because according to them, "people want fashion in their homes, too."

You can catch Syd & Mallory at the show on Thursday hosting their own stall with vintage items from the store.

Ethical and Sustainable Fashion Showcase

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

National Diploma Fashion & Textiles students along with Foundation Degree Fashion students at Kirklees College have created a collection based around the concept of 'Up-cycling' (The practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value).

Students reworked and reconstructed unwanted clothing transforming garments such as 1980's bomber jackets, denim jeans, supermarket uniforms, gloves and hula hoops in to a collection of unique and contemporary designs. The students researched a variety of ethical designers including Gary Harvey and Junky Styling for inspiration.

Course Information – National Diploma in Art & Design (Fashion & Textiles pathway)

Fashion North

FASHION NORTH // NORTHERN CREATE is a grass roots, community driven, community focus project, designed to give students and the local community the opportunity to showcase their creative works and develop creative skills.

The show will act as a platform and a tool for career development and progression, as well as acting as a focal point and catalyst for creative circles and industry networks in the region.

THERE ARE NO COMPETITIONS, NO PRIZES, NO HOOPS TO JUMP THROUGH, NO BOXES TO TICK.

This exciting project is designed to strip back the corporate and highly commercialised reality of most fashion and creative showcases, and reinvent how we present new talent, reflecting the wishes of those who are sharing their works and collections.

FROM START TO FINISH THIS PROJECT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL.

The project has been entirely born of the hopes and wishes of the students and artisits involved, reflecting how they want their work to be seen by peers and industry representatives, rather than through any given prescribed routes.

THE PROJECT HAS BEEN DESIGNED WITH EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN MIND AND ALL CONTRIBUTORS HAVE BEEN AWARE OF EVERY STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
